Shey Phoksundo Lake

Overview of Upper Dolpo Trek

The Upper Dolpo region is one of the few places left on earth that is genuinely remote.Venturing to the far western part of Nepal, this trek is the ultimate adventure for those seeking to get off the beaten path.  There are no lodges, no wifi, no menus with pizza and apple pie. However, there is a way of life that hasn't changed since centuries which makes this isolated trek the closest thing to time travel .

If you’ve done other Himalayan treks and found them too crowded and polite, too paved with tea houses and Wi-Fi signals, Upper Dolpo is waiting for you.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a flight to Juphal in the Dolpa District . From Juphal, a short drive leads to Dunai, where walking begins.

The trail enters Shey Phoksundo National Park and ascends through forests to a turquoise Phoksundo Lake (3,738m), the deepest alpine lake in the world . After following the lake's western edge, the route continues north to cross Kang-La Pass, the trek's U point at 5,360m . The descent leads to Shey Gompa, situated below Crystal Mountain which is said to bring about a spiritual purification.

From Shey Gompa, the trail continues through Saldang, one of the largest villages in the region, and crosses additional passes before descending through the Tarap Valley and Dho Tarap. The final stretch follows the Bheri River back to Dunai, where a flight to Nepalgunj and onward to Kathmandu completes the circuit .

You’re likely to spot the wildlife along the way, including snow leopards, blue sheep, yaks, and more.

The Upper Dolpo Trek is physically demanding and requires mental toughness and endurance. However, those who are determined and work hard to accomplish this trek will gain moroe than they give. This pure trekking adventure allows you to experience the beauty of nature and interact with the local people and their culture.
